The Grammer Children and the children of the Grammers' (iv)

It really does not matter how many children entered the U.S. with her assistance. Mabel Grammer took action creatively using the only method at her disposal.

As 'Grammer children' we can revisit our past and renew our lives.(xiii)

All of the 'grammer children' share a hidden common bond. Doris McMillon, author of "Mixed Blessings,” suggested a reunion of former ‘brown babies.’ This could prove to be a healing event providing closure for those seeking identity among their "own kind" or reinvigorate those searching for their biological relatives. Thus, a reunion of Brown Babies is planned where we were last seen together in the U.S., the old Idlewild Airport section of now Kennedy Airport in N.Y. The tentative dates are October 3rd thru 9th of 2008.

The Grammer Children website is a resource for 'your own kind' (xii)

This website is designed to provide resources and suggest alternatives for your search from the experiences and resources of others. Hopefully it can become a haven for healing and free expression during your search for identity. More significantly this site will be used to unite those once special children of “similar kind.”

Are 'brown babies' Black, White, German, African American, Afro-German or "other?" (xi)

There is a need for a comparative perspective on this age old debate. However, the ‘brown babies’ in the U.S. raise far more challenging questions toward such a debate.
Have they assimilated into the black community well?
Do we perceive ourselves as being Black, Afro-German, Afro-American, German American, Colored, White, Other, or just American?
…Or did we, as we grew older, make a “choice”?
What was it like growing up in the turbulent 60’s when “Papa had a brand new bag” and our friends were White or “Black and proud.”

"Brown Babies", a call for "help" from the international academic community. (x)

Years ago Yara –Colette Lemke Muniz de Faria published an article in Europe entitled” Germany’s ‘Brown Baby Must Be Helped!

Born in Germany we are Americans with a 'choice'. (ix)

In a conversation with Doris McMillon, a former brown baby and author of the best seller, “Mixed Blessings”, she said, “… in America, you have to choose.” We were on a plane from Chicago to Washington. I was returning home from my first meeting with my biological extended family in early April of 2006. I was recalling the “Guess Who’s coming to Dinner” moment I experienced as I had dinner and met with my biological uncle and cousins. Several times that day I found myself questioning my American orientation and ‘racial’ identity.

Brown babies come to the U.S. others stay in Germany (viiii)

After a long, 17 hour Scandinavian Airlines flight from Germany, the Grammer Children entered the U.S. at Idlewild Airport, now known as JFK, in New York. They were accepted and welcomed in the homes of Black families across the United States. States like “Alabama”, with laws against interracial marriages, created barriers for the adoption of brown babies thought to be the product of mixed relationships. This was evident in other the southern states within the U.S.
